About the Clover Alert System
The Clover Alert system relies on robust television towers that have a proven track record of reliability, even during significant earthquakes and power outages. This system is designed to function without bottlenecks and swiftly notify millions of users, often in less than one second. To use Clover Alert, all you need is the Clover device, with no requirement for internet connectivity, cellular service, or subscriptions.
In contrast, the ShakeAlert phone app serves as an additional layer of alerting and operates through cell phone towers. The use of various cell phone networks can result in varying alert times, with most alerts taking a minimum of 5 seconds or potentially even longer before reaching your phone. Cell phone towers can become overwhelmed and bottlenecked during significant earthquake events, similar to the congestion experienced at large events like concerts and sports stadiums. Moreover, these towers are susceptible to structural damage from tremors, aftershocks, and power outages.
Both systems provide earthquake alerts for magnitude threshold of 4.5, or greater, but Clover Alert offers the advantage of rapid, reliable alerts through its dedicated television tower network.
The Clover Mesh Network is a key feature of the Clover device ecosystem, allowing you to maximize the effectiveness of earthquake alerts. When one Clover device receives an alert from the broadcast tower, it instantly triggers all surrounding Clover devices to sound the alert as well. This communication is facilitated through a Bluetooth mesh network, where Clover devices constantly share information with one another.
This functionality is especially valuable in areas with weak signal reception. You can strategically place a single Clover device facing the alert television tower in your house or business to ensure it receives a strong television signal. When an alert is received by this device, it automatically shares the alert with every nearby Clover device situated in areas where the television tower signal might be unavailable. This seamless meshing and information sharing occur without any manual intervention.
To enhance earthquake preparedness, you can strategically position Clover devices throughout your home or office, such as in your bedroom, children's rooms, main living areas, upstairs office, and even the basement. The Clover Mesh Network ensures that alerts reach multiple locations, giving everyone more time to take protective action in the event of an earthquake.

Installation & Operation
The Clover Alert system relies on the ShakeAlert system, which operates through a network of ground sensors to detect earthquake activity. When an alert is needed, ShakeAlert collaborates with organizations like Clover to potentially provide advance notification to the public before the actual shaking begins.
The unique strength of the Clover Alert system lies in its rapid and widespread notification capabilities. It achieves this by leveraging the established and dependable infrastructure of television towers. When your Clover device receives an alert from the Clover tower, it instantly triggers an alarm, flashes a strobe light, and provides a warning that an earthquake may be imminent. The Clover alerting process (i.e., after ShakeAlert determines an alert is needed) takes less than one second, recognizing that faster alerting enhances safety.
Furthermore, the Clover device offers user interaction as it allows you to stop an alarm by pressing the green clover button. It also provides information about recent earthquakes in your vicinity, enhancing your awareness of seismic activity in your area.
When you initially plug in your Clover device, it will immediately provide voice-guided prompts to assist you with the installation process. This installation guidance involves essentially a two-step process:
- Determining Location: The device first needs to establish its location by using satellite GPS. This step ensures it knows where it is and can accurately receive alerts based on its geographic position.
- Device Placement: Once the location is determined, you will be prompted to place your device in your desired area. It's crucial that the device receives a signal from your local Clover television tower to function effectively.
Throughout this process, your device will talk you through each step and provide confirmation of a successful installation. The entire setup typically takes only a few minutes to complete, ensuring that your Clover device is ready to provide earthquake alerts and keep you informed.
The more places in your home, of office, that are alerted then the more time everyone will have to take protective action in the event of a quake. Locate them in your home or business, such as your bedroom, children's rooms, main living areas, upstairs office, and even the basement thanks to the power of using the mesh networking.
A Clover device may need to be installed near a window with good reception from our alert television tower. You need only ONE Clover Device to consistently receive the television signal from our tower. If one Clover device receives an alert signal from our tower, it will ALERT ALL SURROUNDING Clover devices simultaneously via Bluetooth (i.e., Clover Mesh Network) in event of an earthquake.
Our powerful version of Bluetooth communication can travel through walls very effectively, and can reach a basement or interior rooms. This Bluetooth communication has a range of approximately 80 feet, so we recommend a distance no greater than 80 feet between Clover devices.
Like any television signal, the quality of the signal is affected by the physical terrain – such as hills, mountains, and valleys. Also, typically the closer you are to our alerting television tower the stronger and more consistent signal you should receive. You can review our Clover “signal map” to estimate the signal strength you should expect. View here.
We also included a section in our website that you input your physical address and we instantly inform you if your location receives a strong alert signal.
After your purchase, we included a signal meter on the side of the Clover device allowing you to find the optimal reception location in your home, or business.
The Clover device has an internal antenna that will be able to receive the television alert signal in most instances. However, you may have to locate one Clover device near a window allowing better and more consistent reception from the alert tower. It is important try ALL FOUR SIDES of your location as television signals can be altered many things including large buildings.
To help your reception, we have provided a TELESCOPIC ANTENNA with your purchase. Simply plug this antenna into your Clover device and place near a window if necessary. Again, be sure to check all four sides of your location. Your device will automatically notify you if it is not able to receive the alert television signal.
It is important to use the external antenna you live in area like Sacramento. The Clover alert tower is VHF there (versus UHF for most of Clover television towers). You will be required to use the external antenna in Sacramento. The internal antenna in the Clover device is not able to receive VHF transmissions.
Earthquake Safety Information
It's crucial to follow the recommendations provided by ShakeAlert™ for your safety during an earthquake. ShakeAlert has conducted years of research and offers the latest information on proper actions to take. For additional details, you can visit their website at www.ShakeAlert.org.
ShakeAlert recommends the "DROP-COVER-HOLD ON" protocol:
DROP where you are onto your hands and knees. This position helps protect you from being knocked down and allows you to stay low, making it easier to crawl to safety if it's nearby.
COVER your head and neck with both arms and hands. If there is a sturdy table or desk nearby, crawl underneath it for additional protection. If no shelter is available, crawl next to an interior wall, away from windows, hanging objects, and tall furniture.
HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops. Be prepared to move with your shelter if it shifts during the earthquake.
By following these recommendations, you can increase your safety during an earthquake and reduce the risk of injury. Remember to stay informed about the latest guidance from ShakeAlert and take appropriate actions to protect yourself and those around you in the event of an earthquake.
The Clover device is designed to provide a prominent and effective earthquake alert:
- Audible Alert: It will sound a loud and attention-grabbing audible alert to immediately notify you of the earthquake.
- Strobe Light: In addition to the audible alert, a flashing strobe light will be activated, further enhancing the visibility of the alert.
- Voice Announcement: The device's speaker will announce "earthquake" audibly, adding a vocal component to the alert.
This alerting mechanism will continue to repeat itself for approximately 10 minutes, ensuring that you are well-informed and aware of the situation. If you wish to stop the alert before the 10-minute duration is over, you can do so by pressing the green Clover button near the top of the device. This user-initiated action allows you to silence the alert once you've taken the necessary precautions or assessed the situation.
Helping earthquake victims is crucial and typically involves addressing three critical areas of assistance:
